SCHOOL-BASED FEEDING PROGRAM

About SBFP

Part of the United Nation (UN) Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) is the enhancement of the health and education status of children. To help in achieving this goal, the Department of Education (DepEd) has been conducting School-Based Feeding Program since 2010. San Antonio National High School Parañaque (SANHSP) started the implementation of the said program in 2015.

  • SBFP is formerly known as the Breakfast Feeding Program (BFP).
  • The school provides daily heavy meals with COSACA (corn, saba, camote, and cassava) which are mixed to plain, white rice; one protein and vegetable dish (some of these vegetables were harvested from the school garden); and dessert (usually fresh fruit).
  • The meals are prepared by the school canteen staff following the low-cost and balanced menus planned by the feeding teacher.
  • The program provides food for severely wasted (SW) children (weight-for-height of child is below minus 3 standard deviation, cut-off established by WHO for well-nourished populations).
  • The SBFP involves feeding Grade 7 students for 120 feeding days, using a five-week cycle of standardized recipes with Malunggay.
  • The budget allocated for feeding is Php16.00 per beneficiary multiplied by the number of feeding days, while the budget allocated for operational expenses is Php2.00 per beneficiary multiplied by the number of feeding days. These sums up to about PhP2,160 per student.

The Goals of the SBFP are:

  1. to rehabilitate at least 70% of severely wasted beneficiaries to normal nutritional status after 120 school feeding days;
  2. to increase classroom attendance by 85% to 100%; and
  3. to improve the student’s health and nutrition values and behavior.
